Ammonite and Fossil Coral Pendant
A unique pendant featuring a natural ammonite fossil and a fossilized coral gemstone bead. The one-of-a-kind fossils are set and accented with intricate coils and spirals of sterling silver wire. The pendant is hung on a silver-plated copper chain and packaged in a hand-stamped gift box. This necklace is a beautiful choice for the woman who is inspired by the ocean's creatures, processes, and mysteries.
The beautiful pieces of fossil coral used in this collection are natural gemstones formed from ancient coral. Pre-historic coral was flooded under the perfect conditions, resulting in beautiful preservations of ancient marine life. The proper term for the stone is "agatized fossil coral", because the cells of coral were gradually replaced by the gemstone agate. When the ancient coral was flooded with mineral rich water, the mineral silica (SiO2) replaced the cells of the coral.
Corals are marine animals who generally live in warm, shallow, tropical seas, (such as the Great Barrier Reef). They may be solitary or form large colonies. Fossil corals can be up to 450 million years old, and it is their skeleton that is fossilized with agate. The structure of the skeleton results in intricate geometric flower shaped patterns throughout the gemstone.
Ammonites are fascinating sea creatures that went extinct over 60 million years ago; their closest living relative is the nautilus. The segments that form the spiraling pattern are chambers that were filled or emptied with water to allow the creature to control its buoyancy. The beautiful chambers also have proportions that fit the Fibonacci sequence, which is a list of numbers where every number is the sum of the previous two, creating a spiral. The Fibonacci sequence is considered an example of "sacred geometry", and the sequence can also be found many other places in nature (such as the proportions of pinecones and sunflowers).
The geometric patterns, colors, and history of these two fossils complement each other beautifully. The whimsical wire-work ties them together perfectly, creating a magical piece of art jewelry.
SIZE: The pendant is ~ 2" x 0.8" at widest points. Chain length info below.
ANCIENT OCEAN COLLECTION: Numerous other fossil jewelry options are turned into wearable art in the new Ancient Ocean Collection. The fossil coral earrings shown are available separately. CHAIN: The pendant is photographed on a silver-plated copper snake chain, available in lengths of 16 or 20 inches. The silver plating on the chain will eventually wear off, but its a great affordable option. I also have a variety of styles of sterling silver chains available to enhance your pendant, you can see photos in the Chain Section.
CLEANING: Silver will naturally darken, or tarnish, due to reactions with sulfides in the air. Each piece of Kosmic Krystals' silver jewelry comes with a non-tarnish strip and bag that prevents absorbing and trapping the sulfides and other pollutants in the air. If kept in a sealed bag or jewelry box with your silver jewelry the strip will prevent tarnishing for approximately 6 months. Fossil Coral should not be cleaned using any harsh silver or gemstone cleaners. Some tarnish can be removed with a polishing cloth, but deeper areas cannot be reached. However, this natural patina can give the piece an interesting antiqued look. Any dirt and debris can be easily removed with a gentle toothbrush and warm soapy water.
