When labradorite has a white base rock (aka matrix) it is called rainbow moonstone. If it has a dark matrix, it is just called labradorite. They are both plagioclase feldspar minerals with the same crystal structure, and it is their crystal structure which creates its beautiful interactions with light. The layers in the internal structure of labradorite allow it to reflect certain colors, an effect called "labradorescence". When hit by the sun, the stone lights up with a pearly blue to rainbow iridescence. In dim lighting the stone is dull gray or white, hiding its true beauty.
