Rainbow Sparkle Dichroic Glass Pendant in Patina Sterling Silver
Bright rainbow dichroic glass pendant set with dark patina sterling silver. The glass is made of many layers of shimmery sparkly fused dichroic glass, creating a array of colors from pink to blue. The pictures really do not do justice to the brilliant colors of the glass. The centerpiece is accented with handwoven coils and weaving in sterling silver wire. The silver is darkened with a patina process to allow the dichroic glass to shine bright without being overpowered by silver.
Dichroic glass is unique glass which displays two different colors by undergoing a color change in certain lighting conditions. The term "dichroic" shows this meaning by the prefix "di", which means "two", and the suffix "chroic", meaning "colors." Modern dichroic glass was a fortunate by-product of research by NASA for dichroic filters, but color changing glass dates back to at least the 4th century AD. The unique glass is produced by layering glass between micro-amounts of metals or oxides, which are the substance that creates the beautiful color shifts depending upon the angle of view.
SIZE: 2 inches x 1/8 inches
METALS: The silver has been given a dark color, known as "patina", through oxidation using a sulfur solution. It was then polished to restore highlights in the raised areas, enhancing the details of the wire work. The gemstone shines beautifully in the darkened silver, no longer competing with the silver's brilliance and shine. Overall, the combination of the light gemstone with dark wire work creates a truly intriguing piece of jewelry with a fantasy feel.
NECKLACE LENGTH: This pendant hangs on a black cord necklace. The necklace length is adjustable from approximately 16" to 26". Upgrade options to patina sterling silver chains are available in the Chain Section.
CLEANING: Due to the patina you never really need to polish your silver, however you can enhance the highlights periodically by wiping the piece with a polishing cloth. Any dirt and debris can be easily removed with a gentle toothbrush and warm soapy water.
