Green Wolf Lichen with Fruiting Bodies - Fancy Oval "Reef Aquarium" Wire Wrap Resin Necklace
A lichen resin necklace made with whimsical antiqued sterling silver wire wrapping. The natural lichen specimens are encased in clear epoxy resin, which creates the look of coral reef in a mysterious aquarium. The resin is wire wrapped in sterling silver wire that has been darkened with a patina process. The pendant is hung on an adjustable black cord and packaged in a hand-stamped gift box.
A LITTLE ABOUT LICHEN: Lichens are actually a combination of two organisms, algae and fungus. They both contribute to the relationship: algae photosynthesizes to create energy fro m the sun, the fungi in turn provides minerals and other nutrients. Lichens are able to survive in ecological conditions that neither the algae nor fungus would be able to handle on its own. You've probably seen lichens growing on trees, rocks, or exposed soils and thought they were moss, this is a very common confusion. Lichen makes critical contributions to our ecosystems like improving disturbed soil, removing pollutants from the air, and converting carbon dioxide to oxygen. The species of lichen in this piece is American wolf lichen (Letharia columbiana) collected from Northeast California.
SIZE: The pendant is approximately 1 3/8 inches x 5/8 inches.
NECKLACE LENGTH: The necklace is a black cord with adjustable length from ~16" to 26". Dark patina sterling silver chains starting at $16 are available as an upgrade option. You can see the options in the Chain Section.
METALS: The sterling silver was given a dark color, known as "patina", using the chemical process of oxidation. The metal was then polished, adding highlights to raised areas and enhancing the details.
CARE AND CLEANING: The epoxy resin can be scratched with sharp objects. Please use care when storing and wearing your resin jewelry to avoid scratches. To remove any dirt and debris scrub gently with a toothbrush and warm soapy water. Due to the patina you never really need to polish this piece silver. However you can enhance the highlights by wiping the piece with a silver polishing cloth.
